This week’s TPN Weekly is a look at job search, tech tips, tools, and tricks for organizing and getting the best results  from your online job search efforts.

With a close to 10% unemployment rate, many are looking for job. If this is your first time looking for a job for a while, you may find that the employment search process has changed drastically.

Historically, one might look in the Sunday newspaper for job openings.  Now, one posts a resume on Jobcircle.com, Dice, or Monster.  Because the job market is particularly competitive, it’s important to make the most out of your online job search time.

Tools like Google’s Autofill will help you complete online employment forms that ask for redundant information such as your name, address, phone number and email address.

This tool will save you time while keeping your data safe.

After creating your AutoFill profile, click the AutoFill button to automatically fill forms with the information you’ve provided. If you’ve
set up multiple profiles, click the down arrow next to the AutoFill button to choose which profile you’d like to use.

When using AutoFill, be mindful of the information you’re providing. It’s important that you use this feature only on websites you trust, as certain websites might try to capture your information in hidden or hard-to-see fields.

If you’re unsure about what information you’re providing, you can see a preview of your data before it’s entered in the form by hovering your cursor over the AutoFill button or one of your profiles.

Many professionals have found that proper use of social networking sites such as Linkedin.com and Plaxo.com help to quickly identify and market to hiring managers and recruiters.  By properly completing your Linkedin.com profile, you will instantly connect with people you have gone to school with, worked with and associated with.

For example, if you have your heart set on working at the University of Pennsylvania, the largest employer in Philadelphia, after logging into Linkedin.com, you can search on “University of Pennsylvania” , find and connect with several people who work there.  More importantly, you will be able to quickly identify if there are people who work for the University of Pennsylvania that are already in your network.

Additionally, once you’ve joined a Linkedin.com group, you will see the job postings listed in that group.  Groups are online cafes where people of similar interests connect.  Job recruiters and job seekers are often found discussing news and information in their respective industries.

Remember to use your Facebook network effectively.  Change your Facebook privacy settings to make certain personal pictures and information can only be viewed by family members.
