Education: The influence of technology is everywhere! Educational institutions maintain thousands of research databases and professional journals which makes going to the library for research a near thing of the past! Professional IT training, information access, and career development are all discussed here.

Space: The introduction of technologies such as GPS, satellites, television, and communication have created a global village of connectivity. We enjoy stories from around the world and are able to witness miraculous events such as the Chilean miner rescue. Also, when was the last time you stopped and ask for directions instead of using your GPS system or cell phone?

Consumer Devices: The crew discusses the various tech gadgets laying around the house. Once you really start thinking about this topic, the list is long. The home computer, the cell phone, the gaming system, the Blu-Ray player, the Kindle, the iPad, and the HD-TV are tech gadgets we have grown accustom to having and using.

The future: The debate rages on about the future of newspapers, brick and mortar bookstores, and commercial TV. Dave is a bit more optomistic while Mikee and Steve are convinced these industries are soon to be a thing of the past.

Social giving is a new trend online. It involves using social media to raise awareness and funds for charities and causes. I highly encourage everyone to partner with a cause that your are passionate about and use your influence in social media to help. Re-tweeting a message, joining a cause on Facebook, or doing a podcast about a charity is great way to help if you’re unable to donate financially.

One great example is a podcast I produce: Compassion365 which is raising awareness and funds for Compassion International, a child advocacy group. Get online and do some good!

With a close to 10% unemployment rate, many are looking for job. If this is your first time looking for a job for a while, you may find that the employment search process has changed drastically.

Historically, one might look in the Sunday newspaper for job openings.  Now, one posts a resume on Jobcircle.com, Dice, or Monster.  Because the job market is particularly competitive, it’s important to make the most out of your online job search time.

Tools like Google’s Autofill will help you complete online employment forms that ask for redundant information such as your name, address, phone number and email address.

This tool will save you time while keeping your data safe.

After creating your AutoFill profile, click the AutoFill button to automatically fill forms with the information you’ve provided. If you’ve
set up multiple profiles, click the down arrow next to the AutoFill button to choose which profile you’d like to use.

When using AutoFill, be mindful of the information you’re providing. It’s important that you use this feature only on websites you trust, as certain websites might try to capture your information in hidden or hard-to-see fields.

If you’re unsure about what information you’re providing, you can see a preview of your data before it’s entered in the form by hovering your cursor over the AutoFill button or one of your profiles.

Many professionals have found that proper use of social networking sites such as Linkedin.com and Plaxo.com help to quickly identify and market to hiring managers and recruiters.  By properly completing your Linkedin.com profile, you will instantly connect with people you have gone to school with, worked with and associated with.

For example, if you have your heart set on working at the University of Pennsylvania, the largest employer in Philadelphia, after logging into Linkedin.com, you can search on “University of Pennsylvania” , find and connect with several people who work there.  More importantly, you will be able to quickly identify if there are people who work for the University of Pennsylvania that are already in your network.

Additionally, once you’ve joined a Linkedin.com group, you will see the job postings listed in that group.  Groups are online cafes where people of similar interests connect.  Job recruiters and job seekers are often found discussing news and information in their respective industries.

Remember to use your Facebook network effectively.  Change your Facebook privacy settings to make certain personal pictures and information can only be viewed by family members.
