Google to Shove Their Fiber in Your Backdoor

Wants to build a fiber-optic network with speeds up to 1 Gbps to an experimental group of 50,000 to 500,000 homes.
Will do this in small test markets, go ahead and send in an application for Google to do this in your area… Irish need not apply.
They want to see what kind of “killer apps” developers can come up with for use with ultra high-speed Internet.
According to the official blog on the announcement, they will be sharing techniques that they learn in building fiber-optics networks with the world and operate an “open access” network. Is this believable?
Is Google looking to make ISPs better so that their content can get to consumers faster, or is Google looking to become your ISP?

“Google Buzz is a new tab in Gmail that enables users to connect with one another and pull in information from sites like Twitter, YouTube, Picasa and Flickr. Social updates and posts will appear in users’ Gmail in-boxes.”
They’re going after a slice of the social networking pie.
What crazy thing will they come up with to lure people away from Facebook, Twitter, etc?
Two days after Buzz rolls out, Google makes changes to privacy settings after mucho criticism.
An auto-follow feature that was supposed to make it easy for people to get started that made you and all of your contacts visible to the general Buzz public has been turned off.
“…users feared that the names of their e-mail correspondents would be publicly exposed.”
Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (and from the sound of this quote, douchebag extraordinaire): “Even with these changes, there is still the concern that Gmail users are being driven into a social networking service that they didn’t sign up for.”
“Google also will no longer automatically connect public Picasa albums and items shared on Google Reader, another feature that had been widely criticized by some users and privacy advocates.”
Spammers hit Buzz within 48 hours of its launch. Are spammers getting better at manipulating social networking?

Google v. China Smackdown Update

Same censorship as before the much publicized uncensoring of search results.
Google in no hurry to leave China.

Google founder Sergey Brin: “Well perhaps people don’t believe this but all throughout the discussion of originally entering China in 2006 … and including the announcement last month, our focus has really been what’s best for the Chinese people, it’s not been about our particular revenue or profit or whatnot. And I think there are many potential answers there and it’s a really difficult question.” I haven’t seen that much bullshit since I played cow-chip bingo!
